Weight

traditional weight belt
Weighting is a tricky process. Any changes in kit, no matter how small can have a dramatic impact on buoyancy. To be correctly weighted you should get your kit on, empty your wing and suit, have minimal gas in your cylinders (50bar on a 12, 30 bar on twin 12's etc.) and be able to hold your position in the water at 3-5m.

There are loads of different weighting systems and as many schools of thought as to which are the best, safest and coolest. Pick something that works for you and is a safe option for the diving you're doing. Some like belts, some like integrated (pockets built into a BCD), some like harnesses and some don't wear anything and have all the weigh attached to their main rig.

v weight block
I do a little of both. I have a V weight which is fixed to my backplate between my cylinders, non ditchable weight, and also a weight belt so i have ditchable weight. This means if the shit ever hits the fan i can drop my  weight belt and float effortlessly on the surface even if my wing and/or drysuit inflation fails. However, even when all weight systems are in place you should, in theory, be able to fin from depth to the surface. Even at that, ditching our weight belt at 20m is not a good idea, that's a guaranteed trip to the chamber!

So, this is a list of my suit, undersuit, all the kit i'll be wearing and how much weight i needed to have a controlled dive and maintain a safety stop at 5m.
